Manchester United bolstered their bid to return to the Champions League with a crucial 3-1 win over top-four rivals Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Michael Carrick’s side took the lead midway through the second half when Casemiro made a perfectly timed run to meet Bruno Fernandes’ curling corner and nod past Emiliano Martinez, marking the Brazilian midfielder’s first league goal of the season. Villa responded swiftly, with Ross Barkley firing a superb strike from 12 yards in his first Premier League start in 14 months to level the scores.
United, however, showed their resilience. Matheus Cunha restored the lead in the 71st minute, slotting a calm finish into the far corner following a sublime Fernandes pass. The Portuguese captain’s assist marked his 16th in the Premier League this season, surpassing David Beckham’s previous club record of 15 in 1999-2000.
Benjamin Sesko sealed the win for United in the 81st minute, netting a deflected effort after coming off the bench, as the hosts celebrated their seventh win in nine games under Carrick, who continues to make a strong case for the managerial role on a permanent basis. Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe recently praised Carrick’s “excellent” work but stopped short of confirming him as permanent boss.
