KATSINA — Former Senator representing Katsina South Senatorial District, Bello Mandiya, has died at the age of 62.
The Katsina State Government announced his death on Monday, describing the passing of the former lawmaker as a significant loss to the state and Nigeria.
Governor Dikko Radda expressed shock over Mandiya’s death, describing him as a committed public servant whose contributions to the development of Katsina State and the country would not be forgotten.
Radda extended his condolences to Mandiya’s family, the people of Katsina South, his political associates and friends, as well as his former colleagues in the Ninth Senate.
Mandiya served as Chief of Staff to former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari before making the transition to the National Assembly.
He was elected to the Senate in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he represented Katsina South until 2023.
Following news of his death, tributes have continued to pour in from former colleagues, political associates and friends, who described him as a trusted confidant, peacemaker and dedicated legislator.
Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan described Mandiya as a “thoroughbred lawmaker”, praising the late senator for bringing diligence, intellect and a strong sense of responsibility to his legislative duties.
Lawan also recalled Mandiya’s tenure as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources, where he played a significant role in legislative oversight of the sector.
Meanwhile, founder of Agora Policy and former Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Waziri Adio, also mourned the former senator.
Adio said his friendship with Mandiya dated back to 1988, expressing deep sadness over the death of his longtime friend and associate.
He described Mandiya’s passing as a painful loss, recalling their longstanding relationship and the impact the former lawmaker had on those around him.
Mandiya’s death has continued to generate reactions across Katsina State and the political community, with mourners highlighting his years of public service and his reputation for maintaining relationships across political divides.
